New York Is Obvious First Destination For Flycana
William Shaw, CEO of LCC upstart Flycana provides an update on the airline’s launch in the Dominican Republic and the opportunity to create a low cost carrier in the Caribbean. He also says the A320neo in a 180-seat configuration appears to the right sized aircraft for “the low cost airline we want to start in the Dominican Republic”.

William Shaw:Well, we're extremely excited about the opportunity of a low-cost carrier in the Dominican Republic. For one thing, the Dominican Republic has no airline, right? And 90% of the people who travel to the Dominican Republic are doing it for leisure, which means that price is the most important factor in making the decision to buy an airline ticket. Therefore, it is a prime environment for a low cost carrier, and Flycana will be the first and only low cost carrier in the Dominican Republic. We're still working hard to launch in 2018. It may slip because of aircraft availability, but we're working hard and we've got a great team put together to start this low cost carrier in the Dominican Republic. Well, you know, it's very easy to say the very, very first route that we're going to focus on. It's going to be New York to the Dominican Republic because New York is the 2nd largest city with the most Dominicans in the world after their capital of Santo Domingo. So we want to serve that market. There's about 4 million Dominicans living in New York, and that's the prime destination. Other than that, you know, we're going to be flying between the Northeast USA and Central and South America, as well as all the Caribbean. We definitely want the A320neo. I mean, with the With rising fuel costs, the A320neo, the 186-seat configuration seems to be the right aircraft for the low-cost airline we want to start in the Dominican Republic.
