Mega-Trend: New Entrants

The Covid-19 pandemic has provided a fertile landscape for new entrants to enter the airline market. As incumbent airlines are weighed down by debt and high costs, many consider conditions to be near perfect for new entry; money is cheap, there is a glut of skills, and of cheap aircraft and even rare airport slots have become available. The time is as right as it has ever been – but at a time when the incumbents can least afford it. While most start-ups are relatively small, many are well funded and more than sufficient to disrupt existing markets.
