Tan Sri Datuk Zainun Ali:Yang Bor-Homad, Lok Siew Fook, Minister of Transport, Malaysia, Centre for Aviation, CAPA Group, senior management of Malaysia Airports, esteemed aviation industry leaders and delegates, Members of the media, ladies and gentlemen, good morning, Assalamualaikum. I'm honored to address all of you today at the CAPA Asia Aviation Summit and Sustainability 2023. As we come together today, we celebrate the collective progress of the aviation industry and the promising opportunities that lie ahead in our journey towards sustainability. Before I proceed, I wish to extend my heartfelt thanks to Yang Berhormat Lok Siew Fook, our Minister of Transport, for joining us today for the opening ceremony of this summit. Ladies and gentlemen, the aviation industry stands as testament to human ingenuity, standing out as a wild idea of 2 brothers, it has grown into an industry sector that commands— connects people, cultures, and economies across the globe. Malaysia Airports takes pride in its role within the sector, driving the country's economic growth, promoting tourism, and fostering trade relationships through our 39 airports, which serve as gateways connecting Malaysia worldwide. Since 2020, Malaysia Airports has been strategically transformed to address challenges posed by the— caused by the pandemic. We have made significant progress becoming more adaptable and agile in navigating challenges and seizing growth opportunities. I am delighted to mention that air traffic within our own network of airports continues to improve tremendously. In the 3rd quarter of 2023, we registered 32.6 million passenger movement, and this is 83.3— 88.3% of pre-pandemic levels in 2019. So we are indeed on the road to recovery. The future of aviation industry indeed looks good and looks promising. The recent quarterly air travel outlook by the Airports Council International reveals that global passenger traffic is expected to reach 8.6 billion passengers, that is 94.2% of 2019 levels. The Asia-Pacific region is expected to reach approximately 3.4 billion passengers in 2024, which is 99.5% of 2019 level. I believe that the optimistic outlook brings much excitement and enthusiasm to all of us vested players. While we may be brimming with hope at the prospect of this much-awaited growth, we also share a responsibility as industry players to ensure sustainable aviation practices and make a collective effort towards more action, less talk in this aspect. To this effect, Malaysia Airports has also embarked on a crucial journey to enhance our sustainability framework. This has resulted in a comprehensive strategy and roadmap towards achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. One aspect of our sustainability endeavor focuses on energy efficiency. Despite a substantial increase in business activity across all our airports, I want to share with you a crucial element. We have successfully curtailed the growth of energy usage. Even with increased passenger volume, we have maintained sustainable energy practices, with energy usage only expanding by 20% against passenger growth of 391% over a year. Additionally, we have also undertaken several initiatives to reduce our carbon footprint and improve the efficiency of our operations, such as expanding our solar photovoltaic installations across multiple airports in Malaysia. Collectively, the total solar energy generated in 2022 reached 19,192 megawatt-hours, saving the company almost RM1.5 million in energy costs, a 35% reduction. In bringing these sustainability practices into our events, I am pleased to inform you that we have obtained renewable energy certificates to offset all of the energy used over the course of this summit with energy from renewable energy sources. In addition to this effort, I'm also proud to share that in lieu of door gifts, we have collaborated with the Hijau Malaysia Foundation to plant a red mangrove tree in honor of each and every one of our CAPA delegates today. This means that 350 trees will be planted at the Paya Bakau Recreation Centre Park in Sejongkang, Selangor, to strengthen the natural mangrove ecosystem within the park. For this, each delegate will be receiving an e-certificate symbolizing our shared commitment to sustainability. Ladies and gentlemen, as we stand on the threshold of a bright future for aviation, let us not forget the critical role we play. The recovery we are witnessing is nothing short of remarkable. This journey extends beyond passenger volumes and profit margins. It is about responsible growth, sustainability, and leaving a legacy that endures for generations. As we move forward, may our industry continue to thrive, and may the legacy we create inspire future generations. Thank you all once again for being here, and I wish you a very successful summit. Thank you, Tan Sri.
