As an international aviation hub, HKIA connects to about 200 destinations around the world and has been named the world's busiest cargo airport for 13 times since 2010.

The Three-runway System (3RS) at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) was commissioned on 28-Nov-2024.

With all three runways in operation, HKIA will be able to expand its air network and meet the target of serving 120 million passengers and handling 10 million tonnes of cargo.

Leveraging Hong Kong's unique edges and enhancing the airport's capacity, Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) is developing the Airport City to a regional landmark and boosting the sea and land connectivity between HKIA and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), reinforcing its status as the international hub for both passengers and cargo in the GBA.

3RS Commissioning: A new chapter for aviation development

AAHK commenced the construction of the 3RS in Aug-2016.

As Hong Kong's largest infrastructure projects in recent years, the 3RS project is almost equivalent to building a new airport next to the existing one.

It involved reclaiming 650 hectares of land, and building a new 3,800-metre-long runway (the new North Runway) and the related taxiway systems, among others.

The new Third Runway (North Runway) was commissioned in Nov-2022

The new North Runway was officially commissioned in Nov-2022 as planned, with the Centre Runway temporarily closed in tandem for reconfiguration.

The reconfiguration works of the Centre Runway completed last year. On 28-Nov-2024, HKIA commissioned the 3RS, entering a new era of the aviation history of Hong Kong.

Elevated airport capacity drives economic growth

With the commissioning of 3RS, HKIA's capacity is significantly increased to meet the target of serving 120 million passengers and handling 10 million tonnes cargo.

3RS will facilitate the transport of passengers and cargo between Hong Kong, the GBA and the world, bolster regional economic growth and reinforce HKIA's role as a double gateway connecting the region and the world.

3RS can handle 120 million passengers and 10 million tonnes of cargo annually by 2035

Enhanced connectivity in the GBA elevates efficiency and passenger experience

AAHK continues to enhance its intermodal service in the GBA.

Transfer passengers can use its high-speed ferry service at nine ports in the GBA to enter the restricted area of HKIA directly for boarding.

The latest extension of this sea-to-air transfer service to the Pazhou Port in Guangzhou provides convenience to global traders visiting the China Import and Export Fair (Canton Fair) Complex.

With land transport connections, transfer passengers from Zhuhai or Macao can travel on a bonded bus across the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao-Bridge (HZMB) and can also directly enter the airport's restricted area at the new SkyPier Terminal for their onward international journey.

Meanwhile, AAHK is developing two automated car parks, "Park and Fly" and "Park and Visit", in the restricted area of the Hong Kong Port of the HZMB.

These will enable transfer passengers from the GBA to fly via HKIA and inbound visitors to enter Hong Kong.
