Southern Cross Group Purchases Two Pratt & Whitney Power Systems FT8® SWIFTPAC™ Gas Turbines

EAST HARTFORD (Pratt & Whitney) - Pratt & Whitney Power Systems, Inc., a United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX) company, has reached agreement for Southern Cross Group to purchase two FT8® SWIFTPAC™ gas turbine units.

Southern Cross will site the units in Charrua, Chile, using a simple cycle, dual fuel application. The dual fuel powered units will produce a total 120 megawatts of power, with each unit generating 60 megawatts. Errazuriz Asociados e Ingenieros (EAI) will install the units, which will enter service in August 2006. Financial terms of the agreement are not being disclosed.

“We are excited to be working with Southern Cross in offering the FT8 SWIFTPAC units,” said Peter Christman, Jr., President of Pratt & Whitney Power Systems. “The SWIFTPAC offers a flexible operating configuration and a low-cost solution for Southern Cross’s peaking power needs.”

The FT8 series is designed and manufactured by Pratt & Whitney Power Systems and is a derivative of Pratt & Whitney’s JT8D aircraft engine, one of the most successful flight engines in aviation history. The FT8 gas turbine leverages the extensive experience of the JT8D while incorporating updated technologies to produce power rapidly with base-load and part-load efficiencies.

The FT8 has been in production since 1991 and is now successfully operating at more than 70 customer sites around the world. With more than 250 installed or on order, the FT8 is currently running at fleet reliability levels greater than 99 percent and has accumulated more than 1.9 million hours of operation.
