Siemens luggage conveyor system for new T4 terminal of the Barajas Airport in Madrid is in operation

Analysis

The Spanish airport operating company AENA (Aeropuertos Espa

With the Siemens system, the airport terminal with its 172 check-in counters and 33 departure gates can handle approximately 16,500 pieces of luggage per hour. Furthermore, AENA and Siemens agreed on a one-year service contract worth roughly 10 million euros.

Thanks to the new T4 terminal, AENA has considerably increased the capacity at the Madrid airport to now 70 million passengers annually - that is 60 percent of the total passenger volume at the Madrid airport. To cope with the high number and many different types of pieces of luggage, fast and reliable sorting of the luggage on its way from and to the airplanes is very important. The passengers see only a small part of the system in the check-in and arrival areas, while in the background extremely fast and complex sorting processes are taking place. The new system is a combined belt and container conveyor system from Siemens. The luggage is transported at a speed of up to 10 meters per second on conveyors with a total length of roughly 95 kilometers. The passenger terminal is connected with the main building via a tunnel that is two kilometers long.

Siemens supplied both the luggage conveyor system as well as the associated information and control system. The system is software-controlled, thus transport routes can be changed in real time. Furthermore, every single piece of luggage can be located any time and at any location. Thanks to the redundant layout of the system, a high degree of failure safety is ensured. The system can even handle short transfer times of only 45 minutes.

When the system was handed over, AENA and Siemens also agreed on a one-year service contract worth approximately 10 million euros. The airport operating company thus relies on the substantial expertise and many years of experience of Siemens. More than 12,500 components need to be serviced.

Siemens has become one of the world's leading suppliers of airport logistics systems thanks to its innovative strength and capability. With projects at the Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris and the Franz-Josef-Strauß Airport in Munich, Siemens I&S has thus implemented all major luggage conveyor system projects in Europe.
