International passenger traffic in May up 7 pct yr-on-yr

SINGAPORE (XFNews-ASIA) - The International Air Transport Association (IATA) said international passenger traffic in May grew 7 pct year-on-year while freight traffic rose 5.1 pct, improving the overall international load factor by 1.4 pct to 73.6 pct.

"This positive demand environment is helping the global airline industry to offset some of the sharp increases in jet fuel prices," IATA director general and CEO Giovanni Bisignani said in a statement.

"And it is helping airlines boost revenues by an average of 10 pct over the past three years," he said.

For the first five months of the year, passenger traffic was up 6.8 pct year-on-year while freight traffic grew 5.4 pct and the overall load factor stood at 74.5 pct.
