Ron Mathison, Cathay Pacific director and general manager for cargo, said the addition of Beijing to the airline's freighter network "will open up new opportunities for shippers in the north of China and strengthen Hong Kong's position as the leading air cargo hub in Asia."
He said Cathay Pacific expects major shipments from Hong Kong and Taiwan to Beijing to comprise of electronics and computers parts for final assembly in the capital, along with garments.
Out of Beijing, finished electronics products and computer goods bound for Taiwan, the United States and Europe will take up much of the freighter space, he said.
Mathison also said Cathay Pacific will operate a daily passenger service to Shanghai from Hong Kong starting Dec 1.
The airline operates a freighter service to and from Shanghai, currently with 12 flights a week.
It also operates 14 passenger flights to Beijing each week and a thrice-weekly passenger service to Xiamen.
