Asia on a budget
Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra recently announced a proposal to keep Bangkok’s Don Muang Airport operational after the opening in June of the New Bangkok International Airport. Philippine President Arroyo also last week approved a proposal to expand the terminal at Diosdado Macapagal International Airport – a fast-growing LCC airport north of Manila.
Meanwhile, Garuda Indonesia has joined the growing list of full service carriers to confirm plans to establish a subsidiary LCC. Garuda’s LCC could operate up to 15 narrowbody aircraft and will be based on its existing domestic Citilink operation and possibly involve a strategic partner, though specific ownership details were not disclosed. Air Macau and All Nippon Airways last week announced plans to establish subsidiary LCCs to counter rising competition.
