MAp reports passenger traffic gains across all three airports
MAp's airports achieved "strong growth" in Apr-2011, with Sydney benefitting from the later timing of Easter holidays. Results from the European airports were distorted by the Icelandic ash cloud in 2010. Excluding the ash cloud, Copenhagen and Brussels grew by approximately 10% and 3% respectively, according to MAp.
Traffic highlights in Apr-2011 were as follows:
- Sydney Airport:
- Passenger numbers: 3.0 million, +4.1%;
- Domestic: 2.0 million, +2.3%;
- International: 956,000, +8.7%;
- Passenger numbers: 3.0 million, +4.1%;
- Copenhagen Airport:
- Passenger numbers: 1.8 million, +39.0%;
- Domestic: 141,000m +31.5%;
- International: 1.3 million, +47.5%;
- Transfer: 403,000, +19.3%;
- Passenger numbers: 1.8 million, +39.0%;
- Brussels:
MAp CEO, Ms Kerrie Mather, said: "Sydney delivered impressive growth during April with international traffic increasing significantly on the pcp, reflecting the surge in Australian outbound travel as a result of the later timing of Easter and school holidays in 2011. International travel continues to be an attractive option for Australians, with the Australian dollar remaining at near record levels. Continuation of strong passenger growth from China, India and New Zealand also contributed significantly to the positive result. During the month, Emirates confirmed that it will recommence its third daily service to Dubai in October 2011, providing another boost to Middle Eastern capacity."
Copenhagen's International O&D traffic growth was "pleasing", according to Ms Mather, given the ongoing effect of the disruptions in the Middle East and the natural disaster in Japan. Year to date traffic is up 12.0% year-on-year.
Brussels' throughtput continued to be affected in April by disruption in services to Libya and the Ivory Coast, however Ivory Coast services were reopened at the end of the month. Over the past 12 months, traffic has grown 6.6% reflecting continuing network development and general traffic recovery post the GFC, according to MAp. "In addition, it is pleasing to report that Jet Airways, one of the largest operators at Brussels Airport, has announced an approximate 4% increase in capacity through the introduction of larger aircraft types on some Mumbai-Brussels-Newark services," Ms Mather said.
MAp shares were steady yesterday at AUD2.95 ahead of today's AGM in Sydney.
