IATA: Oil is the wild card - Fuel Watch

Analysis

IATA Director General and CEO, Giovanni Bisignanni, labelled oil prices as the "wild-card" for airlines this year, even as it has halved its forecast for industry losses in 2010 from USD5.6 billion to USD2.8 billion.

As economic recovery continues and conditions improve, the price of oil has gradually climbed, maintaining prices above USD80 per barrel this week. IATA has raised its expected average oil price for 2010 to USD79 per barrel, up from the previous forecast, made in Dec-2009, of US75 per barrel.

This USD4 per barrel increase, along with increasing airline activity, as global passenger numbers are expected to increase 5.6% in 2010, is expected to raise the airline industry fuel bill to USD132 billion. This is an increase of USD19 billion over 2009 levels, and lifts fuel's share of total operating costs to 26%, up from 24% in 2009.

Oil stays at USD80 per barrel

Oil prices breached USD80 per barrel this week and stayed firmly above this level, finishing the week to 09-Mar-2010 2.4% higher, at USD81.50 per barrel.
