Growth Momentum Continues in Air Traffic at HKIA

Boosted by the robust growth of air traffic, cargo throughput at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) recorded a double-digit growth in February.
A total of 225,000 cargo tonnages were handled during the month, representing an increase of 10% compared to the same period last year.
Healthy growth was also recorded in passenger volume and aircraft movements. Passenger throughput reached 3.27 million in February, up 5.5% over last year. Last February was a peak month owing to the extra traffic generated by the Chinese New Year holiday, which partly accounted for the relatively lower passenger growth rate of this February.
Amounting to 20,685, aircraft movements also rose 8.1% on a year-on-year basis.
Commercial Director of the Airport Authority (AA) Mr Hans Bakker said, "The outlook for the first half of 2006 remains positive. We are confident in having continuous growth in all traffic categories.
"To strengthen the international and regional hub position of HKIA, we need to plan ahead to look into the future development of airport business and the aviation industry. Last month we organized HKIA 2025 Summit to garner opinion for the development of the airport in 20 years' time. AA will host the Air Cargo Forum 2006 in late March to explore the key issues and challenges faced by the air cargo industry."
In the rolling 12-month period, passenger and air cargo throughputs reached 41.39 million and 3.4 million tonnes, increasing by 9.5% and 10.3% year-on-year respectively. The aircraft movements grew 11.5%, amounting to 267,900.
