American Airlines and Japan Airlines launch trans-Pacific alliance

Analysis

American Airlines and Japan Airlines quietly launched their trans-Pacific alliance today (01-Apr-2011). The partnership allows American and JAL to coordinate schedules, set fares and market promotions jointly.

Despite challenges in the Japanese market, the carriers are committed to the partnership "for the long term", said Tsutomu Ando, JAL's executive officer for international alliance, speaking with the Wall Street Journal. American Airlines' shares slumped 5.7% yesterday.

American Airlines is suspending two of its six daily services to Japan (New York-Tokyo Haneda and Dallas-Tokyo Narita) from 06-Apr-2011 to 26-Apr-2011, due to a slump in demand.

Selected AAD daily share price movements (% change): 1-Apr-2011
