Al Maktoum International Airport development pushed back a year
In early Feb-09, Dubai Airports CEO, Paul Griffiths, announced the first phase opening of the new Al Maktoum International Airport (Jebel Ali) will be pushed back until 2010. The first of the airport's six runways was scheduled to open in late 2008 and the completion of the airport's first phase was scheduled to follow in mid 2009. Construction and licensing delays, and easing air travel demand have all been cited as reasons for the postponement. Mr Griffiths stated that it had been an "aspiration" to open the airport in 2009.
