Airlines, associations and suppliers put weight behind third runway for Hong Kong
Industry associations and Hong Kong-based airlines and suppliers have put their full support behind the construction of a third runway at Hong Kong International Airport. Airport Authority Hong Kong has forwarded two proposals for the HKIA Master Plan 2030: Option 1 proposes to enhance the capacity of the two runways; while Option 2 proposes the building of a third runway.
Cathay Pacific CEO John Slosar said that HKIA is "a victim of its own success" and that its two runways face traffic saturation 15-20 years before the original blueprint forecast of 2040.
IATA, Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) and Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Company Limited (HAECO) also expressed their support for the construction of a third runway at HKIA. IATA noted that HKIA is rapidly approaching its effective capacity of 74 million passengers and 6 million tonnes of cargo. In 2010, HKIA served a record 50.9 million passengers and 4.1 million tonnes of cargo. IATA airlines serving HKIA forecast that by 2014, 62.2 million passengers and 5.3 million tonnes of cargo will travel to and from Hong Kong.
In Italy, shares in Aeroporto di Venezia jumped 6.1%. The airport is set to benefit from the temporary closure of Treviso airport between 01-Jun-2011 and 30-Sep-2011. Flights scheduled for Treviso will be rerouted to Venice, adding around 200,000 passenger per month to the airport's traffic
