Australian passenger traffic expected to double by 2030, with concentration at major airports

Australia's Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development released (Sep-2014) its Transport Security Outlook to 2025. The outlook includes the following key points:

  • Australia is forecast to see inbound arrivals reaching 36.6 million by 2030;
  • Highest annual passenger arrival growth by origin over the forecast period is expected to be led by India (7.3%), China (7.1%), the Middle East (6%) and Indonesia (5.6%);
  • A growing share of visitors is likely to arrive on low cost carriers;
  • Australian outbound travel is experiencing a shift toward North Asia. The highest average annual passenger growth over the forecast period is expected for trips to China (5.1%) and Singapore (4.1%);
  • The share of trips to traditional market leaders New Zealand and Indonesia is forecast to decline over the outlook period;
  • Passenger traffic through Australian airports is expected to double by 2030, the bulk of this will likely be concentrated through relatively few airports;
  • International passenger movements through Australian airports are forecast to continue to be dominated by Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, with the highest growth between 2010 and 2030 expected to occur in Sydney (142%), Gold Coast (221%), Melbourne (19%) and Perth (176%).
  • The largest growth in total passenger movements through major airports between 2010 and 2030 is expected to occur in Sydney (101%), Gold Coast (139%), Perth (135%) and Darwin (127%). [more - original PR]
