South Korea's int'l pax numbers up 10% in 3Q2012, domestic pax down 2%

South Korea's Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs reports (19-Oct-2012) the following traffic highlights for the three months ended Sep-2012:

  • Passenger numbers:
    • International: 13 million, +10.4% year-on-year;
    • By region:
      • Japan: 3.1 million, +12.7%;
      • China: 3.2 million, +11.9%;
      • Southeast Asia: 3.9 million, +10.2%;
      • Americas: 1.1 million, +0.6%;
      • Europe: 946,801, +9.7%;
      • Oceania: 428,904, +13.6%;
      • Others: 203,326, +12%;
    • Domestic: 5.4 million, -1.9%;
  • Cargo volume: 879,000 tonnes, -0.6%;
    • International: 816,000 tonnes, +0.1%;
      • Japan: 108,902 tonnes, +1.8%;
      • China: 152,934 tonnes, -2.2%;
      • Southeast Asia: 222,565 tonnes, +4.7%;
      • Americas: 170,990 tonnes, -2.2%;
      • Europe: 132,067 tonnes, -4.9%;
      • Oceania: 13,764 tonnes, -4.1%;
      • Others: 14,895 tonnes, +32.4%;
    • Domestic: 63,000 tonnes, -9.2%.

According to the Ministry, South Korea's full service carriers accounted for 66.6% of total international passengers for the three months ended Sep-2012, while the nation's LCCs accounted for 8% of the total international passenger numbers, up 3.4 ppts. South Korea's LCC accounted for 43.6%, up 1.3 ppts of the total domestic passenger numbers for the three months ended Sep-2012.
