About

Phan Thiet Airport is an airport development project in Vietnam's Binh Thuan Province. The joint military/civil airport is a JV between 319 Corporation and Thanh Dong Real Estate Investment. It is the first national infrastructure project to receive non-state funding.

Aug-2023. Vietnam's Binh Thuan Department of Planning and Investment stated construction for military operations at Phan Thiet Airport will be completed in Jan-2024.

Mar-2023. Vietnam's Deputy Minister of National Defence led a delegation to inspect the construction progress of Phan Thiet Airport. Delegates went on a field trip to survey construction and visited investor and construction units to assess any difficulties and problems that have been encountered. 

Sep-2022. Phan Thiet Airport which will commence selecting investors to start construction at the end of 2022 and early 2023.

Aug-2022. Vietnam's Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh requested Binh Thuan province relocate power and infrastructure works to make space for the construction of Phan Thiet Airport by Dec-2022. Compensation work and ground clearance for construction of the airport and navigation tower has been completed.

Apr-2021. Vietnam's Ministry of National Defence commenced work on Phan Thiet Airport on 05-Apr-2021. The airport will cover 543 hectares of land and will accommodate international flights along with civil and national defence operations. Its runway and terminal will have a design capacity for two million passengers p/a.

Mar-2021. Vietnam's Deputy Minister of National Defence Tran Don reported the Ministry of National Defence aims to commence works to develop Phan Thiet Airport in Mar-2021. Mr Tran said works to develop the joint military and civil airport are expected to be completed within 20 months.

Mar-2019. Vietnam's Bình Thuận Province plans to commence construction for Phan Thiet Airport in the next three to four months. The VND10 trillion (USD430 million) project will be developed on 543ha of cleared land, and the project's feasibility study report was also adjusted to reflect updated forecasts.

Jul-2018. Vietnam's Government called on the Ministry of National Defence and related agencies to expedite the approval of an adjustment plan to designate Phan Thiet Airport as a combined civilian and military airport. The government also plans to extend the airport's runway from 2400m to 3050m in order to raise the airport's capabilities from ICAO level 4C to 4E rating. The increased rating will allow the airport to handle A320s or equivalent sized aircraft and advanced military aircraft.

Jul-2017. Vietnam's Ministry of Construction received Official Letter No.6832/VPCP-CN to comment on the Ministry of Transport's proposal in regards to adjusted planning guidelines for Phan Thiet Airport, which is scheduled to commence operation in 2018.

Jun-2017. Vietnam's Binh Thuan Province urged the Ministry of Defence to complete the land compensation for Phan Thiet Airport development project soon. The VND5.6 trillion (USD247 million) project commenced work in 2015 and is scheduled to complete in late 2018.

Jul-2016. Vietnam's Ministry of Defence conducted an inspection of the site for Phan Thiet Airport on 22-Jul-2016. The 542 hectare airport will feature a 150 hectare military area and 144.6 hectares for civil operations. Authorities acquired 387 hectares for the project and are in the process of acquiring the remaining 155 hectares, with the aim to complete land acquisition by 15-Aug-2016. the airport is expected to commence operations in 2018 or 2019.

Jan-2016. Khanh Hoa province Department of Investment and Planning Director Tran Hoa Nam stated the government will provide the Ministry of Defence VND5.5 trillion (USD245 million) for the development of Phan Thiet Airport and Nha Trang Cam Ranh Airport's international passenger terminal project, subject to the sale of Nha Trang military airstrip. The site is worth an estimated VND12 trillion (USD535 million). According to Mr Nam, the government plans to convert the old airport into a commercial zone under a build-transfer contract. 

Jan-2015. Binh Thuan Province plans to commence construction on the proposed Phan Thiet Airport on 18-Jan-2015 after receiving investment approval from the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, according to chairman Le Tien Phuong. The Vietnamese Government agreed to invest in the project under a build-operate-transfer programme. Mr Phuong advised the estimated 1.6 trillion (USD75 million) development has a total area of 543ha and will be mix-use facility to cater for civil aviation and military operations. Construction works are scheduled to take 36 months to complete, with the airport expected to be operational in 2018.

Sep-2014. Vietnam's Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has approved, in principle, the construction of a new airport at Phan Thiet. The PM agreed to invest in the project under a build-operate-transfer (BOT) programme. The Binh Thuan Province Government and Rang Dong Joint Stock Company will jointly oversee the development scheduled to be operational in 2017.

Dec-2013. The airport will be developed in two phases, with the first including a 2400m runway and 5000sqm terminal with capacity of 500,000 passengers and 10,000 tons of cargo p/a by 2020. The airport may then be expanded between 2020 and 2030 to accommodate one million passengers and 40,000 to 50,000 tons of cargo p/a. 

Oct-2013. Vietnam's Minister of Transport Dinh La Thang approved construction of a new airport at a 543 hectare site serving Phan Thiet. The airport will feature a 5000sqm passenger terminal and is expected to primarily handle general aviation and emergency services.

Aug-2013. Vietnam's Rang Dong Group chairman and CEO Nguyen Van Dong said the company is seeking approval to develop a VND1 trillion (USD47 million) airport terminal at a 500 hectare site in Phan Thiet. If approved, construction would commence in early 2014 and the facility would be commissioned in 2016. The combined military and civil airport is designed to handle 500,000 passengers p/a by 2020 and may be expanded to one million passengers p/a by 2030. The total cost of the project is expected to be VND5.6 trillion (USD264 million).

Vietnam's Binh Thuan Province Government plans to submit a proposal to the country's Government for the construction of a new joint civil and military airport in the provincial capital Phan Thiet. Under the proposal, a JV of 319 Corporation and Thanh Dong Real Estate Investment would invest more than VND5.6 trillion (USD268 million) to construct a 500 hectare terminal with capacity for 500,000 passengers p/a. The project is scheduled to be complete in two to three years and be operational in 2017. The proposed airport is designed to handle turboprop aircraft initially, with plans to expand to narrowbody jets and increase capacity to one million passengers p/a by 2030.
