Alaska Air Group Inc.

Airline Group

About

Alaska Air Group is the airline holding company of Alaska Airlines and Leviate. Alaska Air was established in the 1930s, following the merger of McGee Airways, Star Air Service and other regional service operators. By 1944, it became the largest charter operator in the world.

The two subsidiaries, Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air, operate an extensive domestic network as well as international services to destinations in Canada and Mexico. Portland Airport and Seattle-Tacoma Airport are the main hubs of Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air. Headquartered in Seattle, Alaska Air Group was declared a Delaware corporation in 1985.

In Apr-2016, Alaska Air Group Inc, parent company of Alaska Airlines, and Virgin America Inc announced that their boards of directors have unanimously approved a definitive merger agreement, under which Alaska Air Group will acquire Virgin America for an aggregate transaction value is approximately USD4.0 billion. Alaska Airlines Group closed the acquisition on 14-Dec-2016, becoming the fifth largest commercial service operator in the US with a combined fleet of 60 A320s and 147 Boeing 737s. Virgin commenced the phase out of its Elevate FFP, with members adopting the Mileage Plan. On 11-Jan-2018, Alaska Airlines received a single operating certificate from the US FAA, marking a significant milestone in the integration of both carriers. Virgin America operated its final commercial service under the Virgin brand on 25-Apr-2018.

Alaska Air Group and Hawaiian Airlines entered a definitive agreement in Dec-2023 under which Alaska Airlines will acquire Hawaiian Airlines. The combined airline will maintain both Alaska Air and Hawaiian Air brands while integrating into a single operating platform. The acquisition is conditioned on required regulatory approvals, approval by Hawaiian Holdings shareholders and other customary closing conditions, with closing expected between Dec-2024 and Jun-2025.
