US airports try to remain open, carriers cancel more than 5500 services

US' Indianapolis Airport Authority plans to spend at least USD500,000 to keep the state's largest airport open during the current snowstorm (Indiana Business News/blogs.star-telegram.com/Reuters/The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 2-Feb-2011). The estimated cost will reportedly cover chemicals, equipment and overtime pay for keeping one runway and five of 12 taxiways open. Meanwhile, major US carriers have cancelled more than 5500 services up to 2-Feb-2011 including more than 1500 American Airlines and American Eagle services, 179 AirTran services and 1745 Delta Air Lines services.
