South Korea's passenger numbers up in Jan-2012, cargo down 6.9%

South Korea's Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs reports (21-Feb-2012) the following traffic highlights in Jan-2012:

  • Passenger numbers:
    • International: 3.9 million, +8.3% year-on-year;
    • By region:
      • Japan: 873,192, -6.1%;
      • China: 352,425, +8.6%;
      • Southeast Asia: 1.5 million, +17.8%;
      • Americas: 790,738, +7.1%;
      • Europe: 230,028, +9.7%;
      • Oceania: 168,196, +30.0%;
      • Others: 56,372, -2.8%;
    • Domestic: 1.7 million, +16.2%
  • Cargo volume: 271,000 tonnes, -6.9%;
    • International: 245,000 tonnes, -9.6%
    • By region:
      • Japan: 33,587 tonnes, -9.9%;
      • China: 42,852 tonnes, -16.2%;
      • Southeast Asia: 70,773 tonnes, -7.1%;
      • Americas: 49,318 tonnes, -11.5%;
      • Europe: 39,379 tonnes, -7.3%;
      • Oceania: 5032 tonnes, +13.9%;
      • Others: 3931 tonnes, +6.4%;
    • Domestic: 26,000 tonnes, +29.8%.

According to the Ministry, South Korea's full service carriers accounted for 66.3% of total international passengers in Jan-2012, while the nation's LCCs accounted for 6.3% of the total international passenger numbers, up 2.4 ppts. South Korea's LCCs accounted for 42.8%, up 2.0 ppts, of the total domestic passenger numbers in Jan-2012.
