South Korea int'l pax numbers up 10% in Jul-2012, int'l cargo down 3%

South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs reports (17-Aug-2012) international passenger numbers rose 10.2% year-on-year in Jul-2012:

    • Europe: 327,006, +7.7%;
    • Oceania: 144,259, +9.8%;
    • Others: 69,836, +14.1%;
• Cargo volume: 294,000 tonnes, -3.0%;
  • Domestic: 21,000 tonnes, +1.1%;
  • International: 273,000 tonnes, -3.1%;
  • By region:
    • Japan: 35,912 tonnes, -0.6%;
    • China: 49,900 tonnes, -5.5%;
    • Southeast Asia: 74,186 tonnes,  -0.7%;
    • Americas: 59,126 tonnes, -3.5%;
    • Europe: 44,361 tonnes, -8.6%;
    • Oceania: 4,664 tonnes, -3.5%;

According to the Ministry, South Korea’s full service carriers accounted for 66.5% of total international passengers in Jul-2012 while the nation’s LCCs accounted for 8% of the total international passenger numbers, up 3.5 ppts. South Korea’s LCCs accounted for 43%, up 1.2 ppts of the total domestic passenger numbers in Jul-2012.

  easyJet’s 1H2013 pre-tax result improved by GBP51 million to a loss of GBP61 million. This puts it comfortably on course to achieve the current consensus forecast for record pre-tax profits of GBP410 million in FY2013. It may also be on another collision course with founder and largest shareholder Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou over aircraft orders.

  CEO Carolyn McCall believes easyJet can take further market share from non-LCCs on point-to-point routes. At its top 20 existing airports, where easyJet has 46 million seats (a share of 22%), she puts this potential additional market at 86 million seats. This analysis appears to pave the way for a large aircraft order after easyJet completes a review of its future fleet strategy later this year, although it insists that no decision has yet been taken.

  This would not please Sir Stelios who said: “Good things happen to airlines that don’t order more aircraft.” Under Ms McCall's guidance easyJet's share price has more than doubled over the past year and not just because it didn't grow. It may be time for Sir Stelios to let go.

  Eurocontrol’s impressive medium term forecast of flight numbers in Europe, covering 44 markets for the period 2012 to 2019, sees an average growth rate of 2.3% p.a. under its base case. It contains a number of key points concerning recent trends and the outlook for European airlines. Eurocontrol sees the weak traffic environment of 2012 continuing in 2013, with another year of falling flight numbers and winter seasons especially weak. However, it forecasts a recovery in 2014 and that Turkey will lead the superior growth of Eastern countries both in 2013 and through to 2019. Airport capacity constraints and competition from high speed rail are forecast to cut 1.6% from the total of flights in 2019.

  For charter carriers, 2012 brought some welcome relief as flight numbers recovered from the impact of the Arab Spring in 2011, although they are still on a longer term downward trend. Traditional carriers saw a fall in their share of flights in 2012 and this looks set to continue as LCCs are projected to increase their share further (especially in Central and Eastern Europe). The main point of comfort to traditional carriers is that growth rates to destinations outside Europe are forecast to be higher than within Europe.
