Offering ground handling, catering contract work below cost 'was a crazy thing to do': Qantas Group

Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce, speaking at the carrier's AGM, said (24-Oct-2014) the carrier was moving away from providing contract ground handling, catering and engineering services for international carriers where it cannot provide a profit. Mr Joyce said while the airline has lost some third party contracts, he explained the reason "is we were effectively subsidising our competitive airlines by providing services below the cost of providing them." Mr Joyce said: "That was a crazy thing to do. Unless we can provide those services and make a profit, we're not going to them."
