Kingfisher Airlines has reportedly returned 19 leased aircraft to lessors in the past ten months, including 16 Airbus aircraft and three ATR turboprops, according to the DGCA (PTI, 07-Oct-2009). The carrier currently has a fleet of 71 aircraft, although at least 12 of these aircraft are currently undergoing MRO work.

Synergy spreads its wings to Argentina and Mexico to broaden its strategic Latin markets
After losing the competition to acquire a majority stake in TAP Portugal during 2015, the South American conglomerate Synergy Group has turned its attention to Argentina and Mexico – two of Latin America’s most promising markets. Mexico’s domestic passenger growth continues at a steady rate, and a more liberalised era ushered in by Argentina’s new government is opening up the country’s domestic and international markets to new competitors.
Synergy is taking a sizeable stake in the Mexican regional airline Aeromar, a small player in the country’s aviation market compared with the fast-growing low cost airlines that have grown rapidly during the last few years. Synergy decided to outline plans for its stake in Aeromar just as the US presidential election casts a cloud over the Mexican market due to president-elect Trump’s protectionist rhetoric during his campaign.
Synergy’s moves in Argentina and Mexico are occurring as Avianca Holdings searches for a strategic investor and foreign entities line up to invest in Latin American airlines. For now, Synergy remains Avianca’s largest shareholder.
United Airlines Part 2: Sustaining balance sheet strength while declaring ambitious margin targets
One area where United Airlines has made important strides during the last few years is in overhauling its balance sheet. Its efforts have gained some recognition from credit agencies for its progress in paring down debt and improving leverage ratios; but similarly to its rival American Airlines – attaining an investment-grade credit rating is not a huge priority for United. The airline believes it can achieve some benefits that investment-grade companies enjoy with the current state of its balance sheet.
In order to sustain the progress it has made in balance sheet repair United plans to amend its aircraft order book to slash capex commitments during the next couple of years, including the deferral of 61 Boeing narrowbodies. United is hinting that other fleet changes could be under consideration, including deals similar to the agreement it forged during 2015 to lease used Airbus A319s.
