European Aviation Club: Consolidation in Europe has not worked as well as in the US

European Aviation Club chairman Rigas Doganis, speaking at CAPA's Airlines in Transition Conference on 25/26-Mar-2015, stated (25-Mar-2015) cross-border mergers in Europe have not worked to the same extent as consolidation in the US, due to the need to maintain separate brands. Small to medium sized European legacy carriers face a "fundamental dilemmas" of being too small to compete effectively against major in long-haul markets and too high cost to compete against LCCs in short haul markets.
