Berlin Airports goes against market trend with record 26.3 million pax in 2013, cargo down 10%

Germany's Berlin Airports reported (10-Jan-2014) passenger numbers at Berlin Tegel and Berlin Schönefeld airports increased 4.2% year-on-year to a new annual record of 26.3 million in 2013, including 19.6 million at Berlin Tegel (+7.9%) and 6.7 million at Berlin Schönefeld (-5.2%). Cargo volume at both airports increased 9.6% to 35,239 tons while aircraft movements fell 1.2% to 240,030. Movements at Berlin Tegel increased 2.1% to 174,763 and movements at Berlin Schönefeld fell 9.0% to 65,267. In the month of Dec-2013, passengers at both airports increased 8.4% to 1.9 million, including 1.4 million passengers at Tegel (+9.8%) and 520,571 at Schönefeld (+4.8%). Cargo volume increased 34.4% to 3137 and movements increased 5.1% to 17,775. Commenting on the results, Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH CEO Hartmut Mehdorn said "Our core business is doing very well against the subdued development at other airports."
