Bangalore Airport overtakes Chennai Airport as India's third largest airport

India's Bangalore International Airport Ltd (BIAL) managing director Sanjay Reddy stated the airport has overtaken Chennai Airport to become India's third busiest airport in terms of domestic traffic after Mumbai Airport and Delhi Airport. According to reports in The Hindu and The Business Standard, Mr Reddy stated preliminary figures showed the airport handled 10.2 million domestic passengers numbers in 2011*, while Chennai Airport handled 12 million total passengers, 80% of which were domestic passengers. Bangalore Airport 2011 traffic results are as follows:

  • Passenger numbers: 12.5 million, +11.7% year-on-year;
  • Cargo volume: 224,000 tonnes, +5%;
  • Aircraft movements: 116,851, +7%.
