Transport for London: New aviation capacity for London

Direct News Source

15-Jul-2013 London's - and the UK's - economic prosperity depends on access to a comprehensive network of cities all over the world. Aviation is key to this connectivity, yet severe capacity constraints threaten to limit the number of places that can be served from the UK.

The Mayor of London has launched a campaign to ensure that London has the aviation connectivity to meet its future economic needs. Read the Mayor's message on aviation.

As a result of work undertaken by Transport for London (TfL), the Mayor believes there are three strong options for a new hub airport serving London, all located to the East of the capital. These are:

  • Enlarging Stansted airport
  • Building a new hub airport in the inner Thames Estuary
  • Building a new hub airport in the outer Thames Estuary
  • Read the Mayor's press announcement of his plans for a new airport

The Mayor has commissioned TfL to undertake detailed assessments of these three sites and his detailed technical submissions to the Airports Commision have been informed by this work. They will be published here in due course.

The three proposed locations were identified following an analysis of 16 options, using a set of sift criteria that were subject to a public consultation in early 2013.
