US airline shares mixed. American & Delta falls, United gains

Analysis

Shares of major US airlines were mixed on Monday as oil prices continued to fall for a ninth consecutive day (-0.5% to USD69.51 per barrel) and the broader US stock market was up slightly.

JAL should stay with American - Mineta

American Airlines adviser and former US Transportation Secretary, Norman Mineta, stated Japan Airlines should retain its relationships with American Airlines and oneworld, as an alliance with Delta Air Lines would "not automatically lead to antitrust immunity", according to Kyodo reports.

Delta and American eased 1.4% and 0.8%, respectively yesterday.

Among the LCCs, Southwest Airlines shares edged up 0.1%, Allegiant and AirTran were also higher (by 0.5% and 2.9%, respectively), while shares in JetBlue fell 1.9%.
