Two London airports get expansion go-ahead

Premium Analysis

Stansted and London City to grow by 10% and 50% respectively.

In the same week, central and local government approved the expansion of London Stansted and City airports, both to the east/northeast of London, an area where the Mayor would like to see a new airport built entirely, to replace Heathrow in the west. The eastern areas of London, and the contiguous counties of Essex and Kent, are to benefit from government initiatives to build hundreds of thousands of new houses, effectively new cities. Does this signal a shift in the air transport focus away from the western part of the city-region?
