Skymark: Unit costs 30-40% lower than that of major Japanese carriers

Skymark Airlines held its mid-term plan explanatory meeting held on 12-Apr-2011. The carrier reported its expanding fleet is reducing unit costs - now 30% to 40% lower than major Japanese carriers - and increase productivity. The airline's unit cost (CASK) was JPY8.2 (USD 9.80 cents) in Mar-2011, down from JPY10.62 (USD 12.69 cents) in Mar-2009 and JPY9.5 (USD 11.35 cents) in Mar-2010. while All Nippon Airways shares rose 1.3% higher.

Expansion of the number of aircraft contributed to improve productivity. This makes Skymark's unit costs around 30-40% lower than major Japanese airlines. Shares in Skymark were down 2.2% on Thursday.

JetBlue Airways reported the following traffic highlights in Mar-2011:

  • Passenger numbers: 2.3 million, +9.0% year-on-year;
  • Passenger load factor: 83.6%, +2.3 ppts.
