Malaysia signs air service agreements with 85 countries - minister

Kuala Lumpur (XFN-ASIA) - Transport Minister Chan Kong Choy

said Malaysia has signed air service agreements with 85 countries, including

several open skies agreement.

"(The government) is working towards ensuring a fair distribution of rights between our two national champions," he said, referring to national carrier Malaysian Airline System Bhd and AirAsia.

Chan also said he will meet with Singapore's Transport Minister by the end of the month to discuss the two nations' open skies policies.

On AirAsia Long Haul, Chan said the government will ensure that the carrier gains access to the requisite routes to make the long-haul budget carrier a success.

On Fly Asian Xpress' plan to hand back rural air services to Malaysia Airlines, he said the government is still studying the proposal and will make a decision soon.

Fly Asian Xpress is the operator of AirAsia Long Haul.
