Charges in focus: US introduces peak time charging

Premium Analysis

US Transportation Secretary, Mary Peters, this week announced a new national policy to allow airports to base landing charges on "the time of day and the volume of traffic", replacing the decades-old aircraft weight-based charging system. Secretary Peters said the policy would allow overcrowded airports to "add capacity and reduce delays by encouraging airlines to spread their flights more evenly throughout the day" and "help avoid the need for sustained federal government intervention".
