Beijing Capital – Now the third largest airport in the world. Shanghai and Guangzhou also key hubs

Premium Analysis

Beijing Capital International Airport's passenger numbers exceeded 65 million in the 12 months ended 31-Dec-2009, making it by far the largest airport in China, and the third largest airport in the world, according to ACI. Beijing is on track to overtake London Heathrow this year and could overtake Atlanta as the world's busiest as early as 2012, if recent trends are maintained. By then, Beijing will again be operating close to its design capacity. The pressure is now on officials to make some progress on the much-delayed second Beijing project.
