US Airways expands Washington DC service

US Airways confirmed (03-Jan-2012) it will commence service to 11 new destinations and expand operations to three existing destinations from Washington Ronald Reagan National Airport following the closing of its slot transaction agreement with Delta Air Lines. Eight of the 11 new destinations that the carrier will serve currently have no service to the airport. The new services are the next step in US Airways' plan to focus on its core service areas of Washington DC, Philadelphia, Phoenix and Charlotte. In the first phase of its expansion at Washington, the carrier will add the following new services from 25-Mar-2012:

• Daily service to Birmingham, Fayetteville, Islip, Little Rock, Jacksonville, Pensacola, Tallahassee and Ft. Walton Beach. These destinations currently have no existing service from Reagan National;
• New service will also be added to Memphis, Omaha, and Ottawa. These communities are currently served by other carriers from Reagan National;
• Daily services will be added to Bangor, Maine and Savannah, which US Airways currently serves as weekend operations;

  American and US Airways are pressing full steam ahead to close their merger by 3Q2012, including stressing to US legislators that the combination will improve the overall health of the country’s airline industry and make the merged airline a more viable competitor with legacy and low-cost carriers alike. With just a dozen routes that overlap, the carriers should not encounter any resistance from anti-trust authorities, and given that most the markets are hub to hub pairings, few changes are likely to be made to service patterns once the 18 month integration process is complete.

  Some of the arguments made by American and US Airways over increasing competition from low-cost carriers and their potential service expansion into overlap markets might be overblown as those airlines in previous mergers have been selective in grabbing the low hanging fruit created by the tie-ups between Delta-Northwest, United-Continental and Southwest-AirTran.

  US Airways and American have finally ushered in the last deal among US major carriers that allows those airlines to close the book on consolidation that was opened in the last decade when US Airways merged with America West. While the arguments that the merger between US Airways and America will create a much more stable US industry are sound, the major competitors of the “new” American are not resting on their laurels and will enjoy the competitive advantages of having overcome the typical merger hurdles – labour and systems integration – as the combined carrier faces an 18 month integration period once the deal closes during 2H2013. As United’s recent integration challenges illustrate, declaring synergies on paper and delivering those results in a targeted timeframe can easily be derailed and drag down financial performance.

  Based on 2012 performance American and US Airways combined recorded roughly USD39 billion in revenues and carried 198 million passengers, surpassing both Delta and United in both of those metrics. By their own estimates, American and US Airways conclude the combined carrier can deliver USD40 billion in revenues based on the projected financial performance for each carrier and deliver USD1 billion in synergies beginning in 2015.
