New airport in Serengeti set to boost tourism

Tanzania Government confirmed plans to construct an international airport in Serengeti National Park, with 80% of the USD350 million project to be funded by the Swiss Sustainable and Innovative Project Investment Office (SIPIO-BV) (The East African, 19-Oct-2009). Construction of the airport started in 2006 but stalled in 2007 due to lack of funds. It resumed after SIPIO-BV agreed to provide funding, with Grumeti Reserve to provide the remaining 20%.
