Gambia Bird commences operations and announces schedules

Gambia Bird commenced the following services, effective 22-Oct-2012, according to the carrier's website - see Route Changes Table for more information:

• Accra-Banjul: twice weekly;
• Accra-Monrovia: weekly;
• Banjul-Conakry: weekly;
• Banjul-Dakar: three times weekly;
• Banjul-Monrovia: twice weekly;
• Banjul-Freetown: twice weekly;
• Banjul-London Gatwick: weekly service until 30-Mar-2013;
• Conakry-Dakar: weekly;
• Conakry-Freetown: weekly;
• Freetown-London Gatwick: weekly service until 30-Mar-2013;

The airline also plans to commence weekly Banjul-Barcelona service on 28-Oct-2012 until 30-Mar-2013. Gambia Bird operates all services with 144-seat A319-100 aircraft and also plans to commence Banjul-Lagos, Monrovia-Lagos and Accra-Lagos services.

  Nigerian aviation industry is at its lowest ebb in 20 years following a year that saw a crash kill 163 people, the collapse of a major airline and a domestic financing ban on the country’s two remaining largest carriers, one of which was also temporarily grounded by industrial action allegedly over outstanding debts.

  Faced with a market that has been reduced to an effective duopoly between Arik Air and Aero, along with the associated very high air fares and often systemic corruption, the Nigerian Government is talking of pulling out the stops in 2013 to encourage more investment in the scheduled aviation sector – including fast tracking registration of four new unidentified airlines and the establishment of a new national carrier.

  Both these initiatives were to have been fulfilled by the end of 2012, but have failed to meet the deadline.

  easyJet’s 1H2013 pre-tax result improved by GBP51 million to a loss of GBP61 million. This puts it comfortably on course to achieve the current consensus forecast for record pre-tax profits of GBP410 million in FY2013. It may also be on another collision course with founder and largest shareholder Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou over aircraft orders.

  CEO Carolyn McCall believes easyJet can take further market share from non-LCCs on point-to-point routes. At its top 20 existing airports, where easyJet has 46 million seats (a share of 22%), she puts this potential additional market at 86 million seats. This analysis appears to pave the way for a large aircraft order after easyJet completes a review of its future fleet strategy later this year, although it insists that no decision has yet been taken.

  This would not please Sir Stelios who said: “Good things happen to airlines that don’t order more aircraft.” Under Ms McCall's guidance easyJet's share price has more than doubled over the past year and not just because it didn't grow. It may be time for Sir Stelios to let go.
