Etihad Airways operated (18-Jun-2013) a fleet of 78 aircraft as of 31-May-2013, comprising 19 A320s, 22 A330s, 12 A340s, 15 Boeing 777-300ERs, one A300-600F, three A330-200Fs, three 777-200Fs and three 747Fs. The airline expects to take delivery of five A320s and three 777-300ERs and retire one A340 and its A300-600F in 2013. The carrier plans to receive 12 A320s, two A330s, 12 A350s, 10 A380s, 41 787s and one A330-200F and retire its 747Fs between 2014 and 2020. Etihad Airways' network included 94 destinations in 55 countries at the end of May-2013. The airline commenced routes to Belgrade and Sao Paulo in Jun-2013 and plans to commence services to Sana'a in Sep-2013 and Ho Chi Minh City in Oct-2013. [more - original PR]

The Brexit referendum produced a vote for the United Kingdom to leave the EU, although this process has not yet been formally invoked. In the scope of aviation, one outcome is the potential loss of the UK in shaping air service agreement negotiations. The UK has been a liberalising voice, one that often counterbalanced more protectionist views from France and Germany. The UK is often able to galvanise the smaller EU states too.
The EU now has mandates to negotiate open skies with states, including the UAE, Qatar, Turkey and the ASEAN bloc. The UAE and Qatar, home to the three Gulf network airlines, are expected to produce the most contentious negotiations. France and Germany will surely takes cues from Air France and Lufthansa to impede Gulf growth. In this light there are questions about whether the talks are genuinely motivated, or merely designed to draw out the discussion and thereby not produce any additional traffic rights while under negotiation.
What Air France and Lufthansa need is a real, lasting solution, rather than persevering Canute-like with stonewalling. Although a partnership seems logical, they may have waited too long. The Gulf airlines have found that they can succeed on their own.
Project Hope: Malaysia Airlines outlook hinges on spinning off new high-density A380 charter airline
Malaysia Airlines is planning to set up a new airline to operate its A380 fleet on religious pilgrimage charters to Saudi Arabia. All six of the airline’s A380s will be reconfigured from 386 to up to 700 seats by the end of 2018, and transferred to a new operator's certificate.
Malaysia Airlines is hoping to attract a combination of foreign and local investors to take control of the planned new airline and all six A380s. The group is calling the plan “Project Hope” – an appropriate name given its current predicament with the A380 fleet.
The flag carrier’s A380 operation has been highly unprofitable and the aircraft is too big for operation to London – its only remaining long-haul route. Malaysia Airlines is now committed to acquiring six A350s, which will be used to replace the A380 on London. As selling or subleasing the A380s is not possible given the virtually non-existent demand for the type, establishing a new charter airline is the only sensible option – although still with some risk, given the need to find investors.
