Beijing city government approves plan for new airport

China's Beijing's city government approved plans for the construction of a new airport in the southern Daxing district within the next five years with an initial annual capacity of 40 million passengers p/a (Reuters, 21-Jan-2011). Planners have proposed the new airport to take the pressure off Beijing Capital International Airport. Preparatory construction work for the new airport will commence in 2011. By 2015, the city would have an air transport capacity of 120 million people p/a. Investment figures for the new airport have not been specified.
