Azul and TRIP will maintain the Azul brand name together with a new logo that includes references to the TRIP brand, according to TRIP founder José Mario Caprioli and as reported by panrotas.com.br. Mr Caprioli cited the greater awareness and market penetration of the Azul brand as reasons to maintain it, with future aircraft deliveries to display the new livery. The two carriers will reportedly begin a codeshare agreement until the merger receives regulatory approval from the Brazilian Administrative Council for Economic Defense and the National Civil Aviation Agency, which is expected by year-end 2012 (Dow Jones Newswires, 30-Aug-2012).

Brazil’s third largest domestic airline Azul has been forced to curb its once rapid growth as the country’s economy will endure its second consecutive year of contraction during 2016. Similarly to all Brazilian airlines, Azul has been plagued by soft domestic demand and a sharp currency decline that creates challenges for expenses denominated in the USD – such as fuel and aircraft costs.
Although it will take some time for Brazil’s economy to recover fully from its current recession, some encouraging trends are beginning to take effect. Recently the BRL has gained some ground against the USD, which is a welcome sign for Brazilian airlines.
Azul has used many tools to adapt to Brazil’s current economic slump, including a new relationship with the European airline TAP and equity infusions from foreign investors. It has also show a willingness to lower fares in some markets, particularly to the US, to ensure that it retains a strong market presence once Brazil embarks on a steady path to economic recovery.
Amadeus and Navitaire: a dual brand strategy allowing greater airline hybridisation
As airlines have embraced dual brand strategies to reach full service and low cost growth aviation IT has responded, as seen with Amadeus' acquisition of Navitaire, which mostly but not exclusively powered the passenger service systems (PSS) of LCCs. In the first six months since the deal closed Navitaire has added 230m passengers boarded, to Amadeus Altea's 393m. Navitaire passengers account for 37% of Amadeus' total.
Having significantly grown its market share, and with past LCC product forays not having worked out, Amadeus receives a new business stream. Some Navitaire customers (Ryanair, AirAsia, IndiGo) are larger than Altea customers and have high growth ahead of them. A second benefit is the Navitaire acquisition supporting Altea customers. By owning both products Amadeus can improve connectivity between Altea and Navitaire airlines. Most of Altea's large customers – Lufthansa, IAG, AF-KLM, Qantas and JAL – have an LCC operating Navitaire software. Of Navitaire's passengers – 35% are on airlines that are LCC units of full service airlines. Other airlines may be holding out on pursuing partnerships and connectivity until there is a cheaper, simpler and streamlined way.
It may seem that the Amadeus-Navitaire marriage is about full service and low cost segments, but its greatest strength is the role it will have in the hybrid segment. Hybridity is growing, and Amadeus-Navitaire could galvanise further expansion.
