Australia to introduce 26 body scanners

Australia's airports will introduce 26 full-body scanners in 2011 that will not reveal details of body contours or private areas (Sydney Morning Herald, 30-Mar-2011). A Transport Ministry spokesperson stated: "At the moment we are working through a variety of technologies and are trying to address concerns about privacy and health." The government will spend AUD28.5 million on either of two types of scanners, and is consulting with the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency on which ones to purchase.
