African air travel growing, but market fragmented: Ethiopian Airlines CEO

Ethiopian Airlines CEO Tewolde GebreMariam, speaking at the CAPA World Aviation Summit, reported (20-Nov-2014) significant growth in air travel in Africa, albeit from a low base. Mr GebreMariam said the market share of African carriers is not balanced with foreign airlines, as African airlines carry only 20% of passengers, and the proportion is declining. The African market is fragmented by geography and regulation and the intra-Africa market is not growing.
