Berlin Airports: More passengers, less flight movements

Despite the difficult economic conditions, air traffic in Berlin and Brandenburg is continuing to grow. A total of 5,405,955 passengers used the airports Tegel and Schönefeld in the first quarter; 2.1 per cent more than in the same period the previous year. The trends in traffic figures for Tegel and Schönefeld Airport continue to vary greatly: 3,990,001 passengers were recorded at Tegel in the first quarter (5.9 per cent more than in the same period the previous year), while 1,415,954 passengers were handled at Schönefeld (7.2 per cent less than in the same period the previous year).

On the other hand, the total number of flight movements in the first quarter was down 2.9 per cent on the year at 52,620 take-offs and landings. At 14,565, the number of flight movements in Schönefeld was down 11.9 per cent on the year, while the number of flight movements in Tegel increased by 1.1 per cent compared to the previous year. A total of 38,055 flight movements were recorded in Tegel in the first three months of the year.

Schönefeld and Tegel Airport recorded 7,330 tonnes of air freight in the first quarter of 2013; 2.1 per cent less than in the same period the previous year.

Hartmut Mehdorn, Chief Executive Officer of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: 'The Berlin airports Schönefeld and Tegel welcomed a total of 5.5 million passengers in the first quarter - representing a good two per cent increase. We can be proud of these figures - especially given the limited capacities in Tegel. Over the next few weeks and months, €20 million will be invested in improving the functionality and appearance of Schönefeld and Tegel to ensure both airports run smoothly until BER goes into operation.'

Traffic report for March:

In March 2013, a total of 2,082,927 passengers used the airports Schönefeld and Tegel - 4.2 per cent more than in the same month the previous year. And Tegel is continuing to grow: 1,540,093 passengers were recorded in Tegel in March 2013; 7.6 per cent more than in March 2012. 542,834 passengers were recorded at Schönefeld Airport last month; 4.3 per cent less than in the same period the previous year.

The total number of flight movements in March was down 4.1 per cent on the year at 19,070 take-offs and landings. At 2,864 tonnes, air freight in March fell by 3.4 per cent.
