Sydney Airport: Improved access for regional passengers under new master plan

People living in regional NSW will have better connectivity to domestic and international services at Sydney Airport under a new Preliminary Draft Master Plan released for public comment today.

A key part of the master plan will be to evolve Sydney Airport into two integrated terminal precincts, with international, domestic and regional services in each.

"We recognise the importance of regional aviation to regional communities. The master plan is based on no change to the current access arrangements for regional airlines at Sydney Airport," Sydney Airport Chief Executive Officer Kerrie Mather said.

"In fact, under our new master plan, regional passengers will have better connectivity to Sydney and our network of close to 100 international, domestic and regional destinations and there will be no change to access arrangements for regional airlines.

"We've consulted with and listened to our passengers, airline partners, other members of the aviation industry, all levels of government, the tourism industry, business and the community in drafting this plan.

"Over the past 20 years, regional traffic has grown at Sydney Airport, with passengers increasing by 221 per cent.

"Sydney Airport is proud of the service we provide to regional communities, including an extensive route network during the peak hours and lower airport charges than almost all other airports in the Sydney regional route network.

"The master plan includes a concept to evolve Sydney Airport from separate international and domestic operations into two integrated terminal precincts each with international, domestic and regional services, which will vastly improve the experience for passengers transferring between regional and international or domestic services.

An on-airport transit corridor will also be preserved in the land-use plan to provide additional flexibility.

The Preliminary Draft Master Plan also includes a comprehensive ground transport plan that will improve traffic flow around the airport with a new five-lane road and a bus and multi-use parking facility by 2018. This will create a one-way traffic flow around an expanded T2/T3 precinct with better access for public transport services to Australia's busiest airport.

A number of improvements to the road network in the T1 precinct are also planned, including the creation of a free-flowing road straight through the precinct.

Public consultation

Sydney Airport is committed to consulting regional communities on the master plan.
The 2033 Preliminary Draft Master Plan is on public exhibition for the next 60 business days and can be downloaded from www.sydneyairport.com.au/masterplan.

Submissions may be made until 30 August 2013.

After comments on the Preliminary Draft Master Plan have been considered, a Draft Master Plan will be submitted to the federal government for approval.
