14-Jan-2013 Monumental Day for the Region First Flight Departs the New Passenger Terminal at Duluth International Airport

Just before sunrise today, the first flight departed the new world-class passenger terminal at the Duluth International Airport. This milestone comes on the heels of hosting a building dedication ceremony and community celebration open house, which was attended by approximately 4,000 people.

"This is a landmark day in the history of this airport," said Duluth Airport Authority Executive Director Tom Werner. "After nearly a decade of planning and hard work by so many, the new terminal is open for business. I want to express my sincere appreciation to the entire community for their support and patience during the project."

The old terminal accepted their last scheduled flight at 10:37pm on Sunday, January 13, 2013 before closing its doors for good. Between the last flight arriving at the old terminal and the first departing flight at the new terminal at 6am on Monday, all terminal tenants worked through to night to ensure a seamless transition for the first passengers. Werner, along with other airport staff were on hand to greet and thank customers, which received a luggage handle wrap to commemorate the inaugural flight.

By always keeping the passenger in mind, the new 110,000 square foot LEED Silver certified building will provide a first class customer experience. Some of the improved site features include:

•Multiple pick/up and drop/off lanes resulting in more convenience for passengers

•Separate commercial vehicle lane to alleviate congestion in front of the terminal

•Spacious entry/exit vestibules

•Two main levels, conveniently connected by centrally located escalators, elevators and stairs

•Enlarged, easy to read interior way finding signage

•Numerous windows on each side of the building to allow for natural lighting throughout

•Streamlined Transportation of Homeland Security (TSA) screening process

•Comfortable 400 seat passenger waiting area, complete amenities such as Wi-Fi, TVs, multiple in floor outlets for travelers' electronics, vending, restrooms and a restaurant and lounge

•Modern and efficient accommodations for processing international flights by Customs and Border Protection (CBP)

•Two baggage carousels to provide passengers quicker access to their luggage

The new terminal was designed by architectural firm Reynolds, Smith, and Hills, Inc. (RS&H) in conjunction with TKDA. Kraus Anderson Construction Company managed the day to day construction operations and coordinated more than 100 contractors, 90 of which reside in the State of Minnesota. Over 300 sustainable trade construction jobs were created as a result of this 3 year project.

"The new terminal is something our community can be proud of. It showcases our region and will provide a lasting impression on those visiting or departing," said Werner.
