07-Nov-2013 The Civil Aviation Safety Authority has given approval to Jetstar Airways to begin Boeing 787 aircraft operations.

CASA has authorised the addition of the first 787 to Jetstar's fleet, with more aircraft to be added progressively.

The Jetstar 787 approval follows months of detailed work by a CASA team of experts, which included training inspectors on the new aircraft type.

CASA now has two flying operations inspectors and two airworthiness inspectors licenced on the Boeing 787.

CASA conducted a thorough review of the safety issues relating to the introduction of the new aircraft and will continue to monitor the safety of 787 operations by Jetstar.

CASA's Director of Aviation Safety, John McCormick, said today the approval of Jetstar's 787 operations was a landmark in Australian aviation.

"It is not often we introduce new large aircraft types into Australian aviation so it takes a lot of work by the airline and by CASA," Mr McCormick said.

"I'd like to congratulate everyone in CASA who worked on the 787 approval process for their outstanding efforts to make sure all relevant safety issues were checked.

"I'd also like to congratulate Jetstar for the excellent work they have done during the safety approval process.

"The safety approval process included a demonstration of Jetstar's 787 emergency evacuation procedures and culminated in a series of flights to prove Jetstar's operational procedures will run smoothly and safely."
