09-Jan-2013 Never before have so many passengers flown via Stockholm Arlanda Airport. In 2012 the number of passengers reached 19.6 million. This is half a million more than the previous record in 2011, or an increase of 3 per cent.

Stockholm Arlanda Airport's importance for Sweden is growing. Both international and domestic traffic were up in 2012; domestic traffic increased 1.5 per cent, while international traffic increased a full 3.5 per cent. Berlin, Tallinn and Amsterdam were the international destinations with the greatest growth in 2012.

In 2011 the increase consisted mostly of international visitors to Sweden and the Stockholm region. In 2012, however, it was mainly Swedes' own travel that was on the rise, partly as a result of good access to low air fares.

"Air travel is the fastest, most comfortable and often also the least expensive way to travel," says Kjell-Åke Westin, airport director at Stockholm Arlanda Airport.

While the number of passengers has grown, the number of aircraft landing at Stockholm Arlanda fell from 105,400 in 2011 to 103,700 in 2012. This means that average carbon dioxide emissions per passenger continue to decrease.
