Strong Russian growth story continues in 1Q2011

Analysis

Rosaviatsia, Russia's Federal Aviation Agency, announced in Apr-2011 that Russian airlines carried 11.1 million passengers in 1Q2011, a 10.1% increase over the same period in 2010.

Summary
  • Russian airlines experienced a 10.1% increase in passenger traffic in 1Q2011 compared to the same period in 2010.
  • Domestic passenger numbers grew by 10.3% while international passenger numbers increased by 9.9%.
  • The overall passenger load factor decreased by 1.6 percentage points to 72.0%.
  • Aeroflot-Russia Airlines remained the market leader with 2.8 million passengers and a passenger load factor of 74.0%.
  • AirBridgeCargo was the top airline in terms of cargo volume, experiencing a 27.0% increase in 1Q2011.
  • Moscow Sheremetyevo airport witnessed strong growth in passenger traffic since 2009.

The result, in one of the slowest quarters of travel in the Russia calendar, follows the strong 2010 result when passenger traffic was up 26.2% to 56.95 million, according to Rosaviatsia figures. 2010 passenger traffic figures across Russian airlines and airports were inflated following a deep economic downturn in the country in 2009. 1Q2011 traffic figures demonstrate a slowing of growth, but one that still indicates a burgeoning air transport market.
