New baggage handling system for Sibiu Airport

This new baggage handling concept - presented for the first

time in March at this year's Passenger Terminal Expo in Barcelona - has now

won its first order. Siemens Industrial Solutions and Services (I&S) are

supplying the new, modular Sibag Smart baggage handling system to Sibiu Airport

in Romania. The client is the German Lindner AG, Arnstorf. The order is worth

over EUR1.0 million. The system is scheduled to come into operation in Oct-07.

Sibiu is a city of around 150,000 inhabitants. It has an international airport with connections to European cities such as Munich, Rome, Paris and Bologna. A new terminal is being constructed there with Romania's joining the EU at the beginning of this year. In comparison to purely manual baggage handling, the demand for automated solutions is also increasing for airports of this size. Sibag Smart from I&S is a modular, pre-installed baggage handling system that has been specifically designed for smaller airports.

A complete baggage handling system is being supplied consisting of the standardized units required for comprehensive baggage handling: ten check-in counters, some 75 m of conveyor belt systems with two integrated baggage X-ray stations, a pier conveyor belt for make-up, and two carousels with a total length of 82 m for incoming baggage.

Günter Menden, head of the I&S Airport Logistics Division, said: "This order, coming shortly after the market launch of the new system, shows us that our modular concept is just right for smaller airports. Our modular Sibag Smart system enables us to supply a complete baggage handling system - tailor-made for this category of airport - quickly and at short-notice. We foresee the market for such systems growing, especially in Europe and the Near and Middle East."

All components are pre-installed and tested in the factory. This ensures comparatively short installation times in situ ("plug and convey"). The baggage handling system has a modern visualization tool based on Siemens WinCC, which makes operation of the system easy. The electrical and control equipment is precisely coordinated, and consists exclusively of Siemens components.
