Malaysia Airlines outsources passenger sales processing

Analysis

Kuala Lumpur (MALAYSIA AIRLINES) - Effective 1 February 2007, Malaysia Airlines’ passenger revenue processing functions will be outsourced to Mercator, the company currently contracted for the implementation of the national carrier’s Revenue Accounting Proration Interline Billing and Decision Support (RAPID) System.

Malaysia Airlines Executive Director/CFO, Tengku Dato' Azmil Zahruddin said,'By designating these additional functions to Mercator, Malaysia Airlines will leverage on the solution provider's extensive experience and knowledge in aviation revenue accounting services and familiarity with the specific requirements and processes of the RAPID system. It also offers Malaysia Airlines greater flexibility and efficiency from an operational standpoint.'

'With this outsourcing, the Malaysia Airlines' team will focus on value-added and strategic revenue accounting functions namely, revenue preservation, as well as analytical and reporting functions. These functions, consistent with the "Financing and aligning the Business on P & L" thrust of the airline's Business Turnaround Plan (BTP), are essential for effective decision making, thereby tapping the best commercial opportunities,' he added.

This initiative is in line with the BTP direction to outsource non-sensitive routine processes and mobilize manpower for more intense and rewarding cross-functional tasks. A total of 101 Malaysia Airlines' staff, currently performing the passenger revenue processing functions, will be redeployed as part of the 'Unleashing Talents and Capabilities' thrust of the BTP.

The company will facilitate fresh avenues for the staff to acquire new skills in other key business process areas, where 53 staff will be re-deployed to various departments in the company, whilst 48 will remain with the airline's Revenue Accounting department to enhance the emphasis on the strategic revenue accounting functions.
